FOREWORD

It is my pleasure to welcome of all you to the 9th Malaysian Symposium of Biomedical Science. We are happy to have participants from many universities and institutions across the county here to day, gathered under one roof to engage in constructive dialogue and discussions about the field of biomedical science. Platforms like these are essential for the continued sharing of knowledge and it is also the perfect opportunity for us to expand our academic network which will hopefully lead to more institutional collaborations.

Especially to all the students here, I hope that you enjoy this symposium and learn something from all the activities that have been lined up over these next two days. Soak up as much as you can, and I hope that your time here will strengthen your motivation and love for biomedical science.

Lastly, I hope everyone will have a productive time here and that we’ll come out on the side of this feeling more motivated and excited about exploring opportunities in the field of biomedical science. , As the paleopathlogist, or ‘mummy doctor’ Arthur C. Aufderheide once said, “All knowledge is connected to all other knowledge. The fun is in making the connections.”

Thank you. Wassalamu’alaikum warahmatullah.

Professor Dato’ Dr.Adeeba Binti Kamarulzaman,

FOREWORD FROM THE DEAN, FACULTY OF MEDICINE, UM

First and foremost, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the committee and lecturers for your hard work in organising this symposium and making this event a reality. Thank you.

FOREWORD FROM HEAD,

DEPARTMENT OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE, UM

Warm greetings everyone. I am delighted to welcome all delegates to the 9th Malaysian Biomedical Science Symposium, 2018.

On behalf of the Department of Biomedical Science, Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya, I would like to congratulate the organizing committee for making this event a reality. This is the second time that University Malaya has had the honour to host this annual symposium, since its inauguration in 2010; the first being the 3rd Biomedical Science Symposium (2012).

This symposium is unique as it is organised by the Biomedical Science undergraduates for the undergraduates with minimum/no help/advice from the academic and support staff. The commitment shown by the organising committee is commendable. I am proud and glad to say that these undergraduate students have demonstrated excellent teamwork and leadership qualities.

The Biomedical Science symposium participant number has been increasing consistently over the past few years and has reached an all time high this year with an overwhelming total of more than 600 participants from 11 institutions. This clearly reflects the enthusiasm and excellent support rendered by the Malaysian “Biomedical Science Family” to this annual event.

The theme of this year’s symposium is “Navigate Ideas, Nourish Experiences (NINE)”. I hope this symposium will serve as a good platform for sharing scientific findings, ideas and experiences as well as networking and collaboration.

I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to the organising committee, staff involved, the distinguished speakers, paper presenters as well as all sponsors for their valuable contribution.
Finally, I wish everyone a very scintillating and memorable symposium.

Professor Dr. Umah Rani Kuppusamy,
Head,
Department of Biomedical Science,
Faculty of Medicine,
University of Malaya.
